The concept of IdleWild About Art (IWAA) initially began in 2021 with one outdoor mural created by Idlewild and Detroit-based artist Nicolena (Coko) Stubbs. A seed was planted; IWAA began to grow as a self-guided outdoor art and history tour in historic Idlewild, MI. Its mission is to create interest and beauty throughout Idlewild while supporting and uplifting the community through free art installations and events designed to educate, promote artists, and positively highlight the community while preserving history through artistic storytelling. Idlewild exists as one of the few still remaining historically Black resort towns in America; sharing and preserving our history has become an urgent collaborative community effort.

Access to public art in rural areas, like Idlewild, is often extremely limited compared to the abundant outdoor art and culture in large metropolitan areas. IdleWild About Art wants to change that for this unique rural community. The goal is for IWAA to grow continuously, adding more and more outdoor art installations for residents and visitors to enjoy at no cost.

IdleWild About Art proposes a continual rotation of art installation sites throughout Idlewild, including the Flamingo Club on Williams Island, other Township properties, private homes, forested areas, and landmarks. This initiative will expand into surrounding areas and grow over time, creating a continual rotation of art across various locations and featuring a variety of artists, styles, and mediums.

The goal... eventually, IWAA will grow to the point that it becomes a cultural draw, point of interest, and source of pride. Idlewild will one day be known for its outdoor art installations, giving tourists another incentive to visit and actively enjoy this historic town. IdleWild About Art self-guided art and history tour is always open, available to the public, free, a family-friendly outdoor activity that can be enjoyed while walking or biking at one’s individual pace.

Creative inspiration is found in Idlewild. Once the contagiousness of visible art begins to spread, hopefully, others will join in to support these creative efforts. This project fosters a desire to continue creating, sharing, and growing with the hope of bringing others along to enjoy the journey of art. It is Nicolena’s vision to help grow and nurture the Idlewild artist community by collaborating with other creatives, neighbors, businesses, the Yates Township Board, and local non-profits.
